The Hagstrom H8-II brings back one of the most distinctive bass concepts of the late 1960s: four primary bass strings paired with four octave strings for a wide, harmonically rich sound that can fill enormous space in a mix. Based on Hagstrom’s original 1967 design, the H8-II combines vintage character with modern reliability for rock, progressive music, alternative styles, studio layering, and any player seeking a bass voice beyond the ordinary.
Hagstrom was an early pioneer of the serial-production 8-string bass. The octave-string layout adds shimmer, definition, and upper-harmonic complexity while retaining the weight and authority of a traditional bass foundation. The result can range from broad, orchestral support to cutting, aggressive textures that remain unmistakably bass.
Two Hagstrom Dyna-Rail humbuckers provide a powerful, articulate voice, while a push/pull coil split built into the volume control expands the available tonal range. Four slider switches independently control the neck pickup, bridge pickup, master-tone filtering, and mute/gain-reduction function. A kill switch on the upper bout adds another expressive performance option.
The all-mahogany double-cutaway body is paired with a bolt-on hard Canadian maple neck in a comfortable C profile. A 30.75-inch scale keeps the instrument approachable despite the paired-string configuration, while Hagstrom’s H-Expander truss rod and Resinator fingerboard support stability, consistency, and fast response.
